Take a few skiing lessons. Most skiing resorts offer lessons and support for beginners. They’ll also help you to get on and off the ski lifts a couple of times until you feel less awkward. Before you get on the chairlift they’ll probably check that you have all the necessary equipment. Basically all you do is balance yourself with a spare hand and lower yourself onto the chair. The instructors usually advise beginners to point your skis upward while the chairlift is moving and as you travel up the mountain .
Try to keep your weight equally balanced on both skiis in order to go straight ahead. Later you will learn how to veer to the left or right. Keep a bend in the knees and the ankles and relax a little in the hips. It’ll help you keep your balance.
While still getting the feel of it try and give yourself some space ahead of you and away from other skiers. A very slight slope and a short distance will give you some practice runs until you master slowing down and stopping.
Scanning a little ahead of you is a good habit as later you will be aware and prepared to handle sudden turns or dips.
Ski’s should be slightly apart with weight balanced evenly.Push yourself forward a little to get the feel. Try turning the front of the skiis inward to slow down. The back of the skiis will be apart. But do this slowly and feel how it slows you down. If you turn them inwards too suddenly they’ll overlap and you’ll probably fall .Not serious at this stage. It’s quite a lot of fun ! Now if you allow more weight on one ski you’ll be able to veer to the left or the right. You’ll soon get the hang of it on that practice strip.
To start with you will learn to control your turns and speed while slowly moving down a very gentle slope. You’ll keep the front tips of your skiis close together while the back of the skiis are further apart. You’ll keep your knees bent and lean forward a little.Eventually you’ll start to bring the back of the skiis closer together so the skiis are the same distance apart from the front of the skiis right through to the back of the skiis.Once you’ve got the hang of that you’ll be able to venture to a steeper slope with a longer run. Now remember, to turn ,slowly transfer your weight from one ski to the other depending on the direction that you want to turn. Shift weight, veer to the left, then to the right. Are you getting the feel of it? It’s poetry in motion.
After that it’s practice. You’ll probably love it and that’s it … you’re in love !
