The few individuals who die every year while skiing are not the most common occurrence. Most of those deaths are from taking a risk when common sense should warn against it. yes Alpine skiing is expensive compared to Nordic/ cross country. For the first season I suggest you rent the equipment at the area and take a series of lessons from a qualified professional instructor. Many areas offer a multi week lesson package for a very reasonable amount. When you are ready to purchase your own equipment wait for the ski and boot sales that usually start about the 2nd or 3rd week in February. With the slow start to this season in part of the West, I expect many good sale prices through next fall. You might also consider some ski swaps in the fall for skis and poles and bindings. The most important part of the equipment is the boots so get them at a good ski shop.
