Quotes from the Mentors

”We have all had people in our lives who have inspired us – mentors and role models who have shown us that anything is possible,” said Emily Cook, freestyle athlete and program founder. “Now it’s our turn to give that back.”

”Mentoring is an important, natural process,” said Eric Bergoust, 1998 Olympic champion and program mentor. “Sharing knowledge and supporting each other makes a better human race.”

”I believe this program brings out the best in you, by giving back to someone younger, thus feeling better about oneself, which equates to being a better person and allowing you a better performance” said Derek Parra, a 2002 Olympic Gold medalist and program mentor.

”I think this program was a great idea,” said Erin Porter, a Short Track Speed Skater on the US National and 2002 Olympic Team, “and I think it can become something that makes a difference in more than one person’s life. Congratulations on the successful connections you’ve made!”

 Quotes from the Mentees

”My 9 year-old ski-jumping son, Mason, was fortunate enough to be chosen to have a mentor. Thanks to VISA and the Utah Athletic Foundation’s Mentorship Program (founded by Emily Cook) in cooperation with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, young athletes were matched to Olympic or National Team athletes in their respective winter sports. It was priceless to see the look on Mason’s face at the final Visa Summer Series Competition as he jumped the 40 meter and stopped at the outrun right next to Jed (Mason’s Mentor) – who was already out on the grass waiting to give Mason a high-five. We are looking forward to a great season of jumping, skiing, competitions and having Jed Hinkley’s worthy presence for at least this season.” – Laurie West, mother of 9 year-old Mason West, program mentee and a ski jumper.

”Matt supported me when I was nervous.” – 11 year-old Adam McCallister, program mentee and speed skater.

”This program helped me become more confident in my performance because I knew he (my mentor) was there at all my camps, watching and helping after each jump.” – Anonymous Mentee

”Everyone should have a great experience like me!” – Katie Souza, 12 year-old program mentee and freestyle athlete.
