What are the best downhill ski boots for flat feet?
I realize ski boots are all made differently and trying them on in a store is crucial but doesnt really help as i tried on 3 pairs, bought the most comfortable pair, skied 3 times with them and HATE them…they hurt my feet tremendously….the associate at the ski shop spent about an hour with me but i’m very disappointed with them and thought maybe a boot was out there with my flat feet issue in mind.
My feet from the ankle all the way to my toes hurt badly; toes are pins have needles and ache…..i’m 5′ 3″ 120lbs intermediate skier…..i have Technica’s now, i’ve tried Delbello’s (i think thats what they were) and i skied all day with no issues i should have written down the boot..
It would be useful to know where your current boots hurt. Also, what kind of boots are they?
You have flat feet, but what about the other attributes of your foot/calf? Is your forefoot narrow, medium or wide? And your heel? Height/volume wise, are your feet are chunky or slender?
Did the salesperson assess this when giving you the 3 pairs to try on?
For flat feet, the issue is the footbed and the support and stability it provides. Custom-moulded footbeds made by a competent technician should help. But this is just one factor in comfortable ski boots.
Wide, chunky feet need a high-volume, wide last like Tecnica, narrow feet and heels need Lange or Head, medium to wide feet are better in Salomon or Atomic, while narrow to medium might find Rossignol a better fit.
And how strong are you? How heavy? What’s your skiing style? These factors should all be assessed by the person fitting your boots in the first place.
As for trying out rental boots, this isn’t a great idea as rental boots are usually pretty tired, the liners will be squished and the footbeds will be just the standard ones supplied by the manufacturer (and no-one should ski on those – they’re hopelessly thin and unsupportive). And there’s a limit to the range of boots for rent – usually shops buy a basic, no-frills model for rental use with just a few alternatives for advanced skiiers. Not a great range to choose from if you’re looking to buy.

What are the best skis for a 12-year-old?
What are the best skis for a 12 year old, 5 foot tall, slim, advanced skier who skis on powder, ice, moguls, and advanced courses. The skis should be slightly longer as to carry on to next year. Please provide company and exact model.

You know, people get all worked up over the “best ski”.
There is no such thing. Pretty much all manufacturers create quality skis. I have ridden on practically everything, have skied for 30 years, raced, coached, instructed, and skied some pretty crazy stuff, and find no real difference between brands. So asking for a company and model doesn’t make sense to me.
The only thing you should concern yourself with is the use – which you listed practically everything, and the length, which the ski shop will help you out with.
But to answer your questions on type of ski to get – there isn’t one ski that does it all well, and for 12 year old kids, there aren’t a huge amount of options. If he likes to style in the park, ride the rails, then twin tips are what you want – incidentally, twins are also good in powder.
However, they won’t be good on ice.
Your best bet is an all-mountain ski, which will carve on ice, and handle crud well, plus is fine in the park. Concerning powder, well, the lad is just 12. He will float in the powder on 2×4’s. Kids don’t need to worry about powder skis yet.
Hope this helps – remember – any brand is fine – go for an all-mountain type of ski. Unless if you talk to him he really wants twins. Those are fine – I have a pair as well, they will just be a little less efficient on ice and crud.

Ski help please????
Ok, my sister is a advanced skier and she wants to get a new ski. She skis on volkl ac3 right now and she wants a fatter /all mountain ski. She demoed the volkl arura and she did not like it on groomers and it was just to big for her.
Well, a fatter ski isn’t meant for the groomers. So I’m a little confused. An all mountain ski isn’t necessarily “fat”. And I don’t know how “fat” the ski is she demoed. But she does have the right idea. Demo a few pairs, see what works. Both my sisters ski on Elan’s Magic Wave (or something like that) and they like that ski. It is an average, all mountain ski. Not too fat…good for groomers.
If she wants to ski on groomers, she should get a ski meant for carving. The fatter skis won’t carve so well on the groomers, but they will float through powder, and bust through crud like nothing else!!
