Geschiedenis Van Het Louvre Museum
Het huidige Louvre museum in Parijs is oorspronkelijk gebouwd als een kasteel. Daarna is men het gaan gebruiken als koninklijk paleis. Tegen het einde vande 18e eeuw werd het officieel geopend als museum. Hiermee is het een van de oudste musea ter wereld. Er zijn slechts een aantal museu ter wereld die ouder zijn dan deze. Het Louvre trekt meer dan 8 miljoen bezoekers per jaar.
De collectie van het Louvre museum werd begonnen in de 16e eeuw door Koning Frans I, Karel V, Lodewijk, Napoleon Bonaparte en anderen. Zij kochten onder meer de meest beroemde stukken uit het museum, zoals de Mona Lisa, de Venus van Milo, etc. Mede door giften en koninklijke aankopen, is de collectie ruim gegroeid. In 1793, tijdens de Franse Revolutie, werde de collectie, die tot daarvoor een privé collectie van de koning was, opengesteld voor het publiek.
Het museum heeft een uitgebreide collectie, variërend van de oudheid tot het midden van de 19e eeuw. Totaal zijn er ongeveer 35.000 tentoongestelde objecten, verspreid over de drie vleugels van het oude paleis. De tentoongestelde werken zijn slechts 10% van de gehele collectie van het museum. Het grootste gedeelte van de collectie bestaat uit Europese schilderwerken en beeldhouwwerken. Andere kamers bevatten onder andere Egyptische, Oosterse, Griekse en Romeinse kunst. Enkele van de meest beroemde kunstwerken in het museum zijn de Mona Lisa van Leonardo Da Vinci en de Venus van Milo.
Oorspronkelijk gebouwd als een kasteel uit de 12de eeuw, werd het in de 14e eeuw omgevormd tot een koninklijk paleis. Het huidige uiterlijk dateert uit de 15e eeuw, toen de oorspronkelijke burcht werd afgebroken en de vleugel langs de Seine werd gebouwd. Het paleis werd veranderd in de 16e eeuw door de architect Pierre Lescot, die het paleis uitbreidde met twee patio’s. De bouw van het Louvre is onderbroken voor een tijd, toen koning Louis XIV besloot te verhuizen naar Chateau de Versailles. In de 19e eeuw, onder het Tweede Keizerrijk, werd het Louvre weer uitgebreid met de toevoeging van de Richelieu vleugel.
Het Louvre had vier symmetrische vleugels rond een binnenplaats. Dit duurde niet lang, omdat de Commune de Tulerien verbrandde in 1871, de opening van de westkant van het paleis. Hierdoor is het museum tegenwoordig niet meer aan de westkant afgesloten.
